Conservation Status

The mandarin duck is a perching duck species that displays distinct sexual dimorphism. They can be found on several continents throughout the world.

Habitat & Range
These ducks are primarily found in eastern Russia, China, and Japan.
Identification
Adult males have a red bills, scarlet cheeks, and massive white crescents above each eye. Males also have two white bars across their purple chests, ruddy feathers on their flanks, and two orange feathers on their backs. Like the males, females also have white rings around their eyes. They are much smaller than the males, and display brown feathers.
Diet
These ducks enjoy aquatic plants, seeds, grains, small fish, and insects.
Reproduction & Lifespan
These ducks require nesting boxes and begin breeding in the Spring. They lay about eight to twelve eggs which incubate for about 28 days, and are known for raising their young.

In Chinese culture, Mandarin ducks are believed to be extremely faithful to their partner, and are symbols of love, devotion, affection, and fidelity.
