Kenyan sand boas have eyes and nostrils positioned high on their heads, allowing them to stay clear of sand while burrowing.

Location: This animal is not on exhibit. It is part of our educational collection and may only be seen in programs inside or outside of the zoo.

Habitat & Range
Hot, semi-arid regions of East Africa, Egypt to south Tanzania, Southwest Somalia west to Kenya
Identification
Kenyan sand boa heads are shaped like shovels to help them bury into the sand. They have extremely small scales to protect against the fine sand granules
Diet
Birds of prey and large monitor lizards
Reproduction & Lifespan
Sand boas are ovoviviparous, giving birth to young encased in a membranous sac. Mating occurs during the spring and summer months. Gestation is about 4 months and females will have clutches of about 20 young.
Fantastic Fact
If food is scarce, the Kenyan sand boa can live for up to a year without eating.
