Conservation Status

This non-venomous species is often mistaken for the venomous coral snake. This is an adaptation they use to ward off predators.

Location: This animal is not on exhibit. It is part of our educational collection and may only be seen in programs inside or outside of the zoo.

Habitat & Range
Dry, arid desert Puebla and Oaxaca regions of Mexico
Identification
This species is brightly colored as juveniles, but their coloration becomes duller as they age.
Diet
Birds of prey and small to medium carnivorous and omnivorous mammals
Reproduction & Lifespan
This species brumates for 3–4 months from November through March. Breeding occurs in late spring to early summer, and females are oviparous, laying 2–14 eggs about 30 days after mating. The eggs hatch approximately 55–60 days later.
