Conservation Status

Like with other tarantulas, this species has urticating hairs on their abdomen that can be used for defense.

Location: This animal is not on exhibit. It is part of our educational collection and may only be seen in programs inside or outside of the zoo.

Tropical rainforests in Brazil
Identification
Males are typically smaller than females. They also have venomous fangs that they use to subdue their prey while hunting.
Diet
Insects such as crickets, locust, or roaches
Reproduction & Lifespan
When females lay eggs, their egg sacs can contain 500–1,000 spiderlings. Males typically live 7–8 years, while females can live much longer, sometimes reaching well into their twenties.
Fantastic Fact
Instead of passively waiting for its food like many other tarantulas, this species pounces on its food, sometimes grabbing its food mid-air!
