The lesser hedgehog tenrec is a small, spiny, nocturnal mammal native to Madagascar. Despite its hedgehog-like appearance, it is not closely related to hedgehogs and belongs to a different order of mammals.

Habitat & Range
Dry forests, grasslands, scrublands, semi-desert regions of southern and southwestern Madagascar (dens in tree cavities).
Identification
Lesser hedgehog tenrecs have spines that range in color from white to black. Soft hair covers their paws and belly, and their tail is so small it is rarely visible.
Diet
Classified as insectivores but are actually omnivores (eat insects, eggs, spiders, small mammals, and fruit).
Reproduction & Lifespan
Breeding occurs in October; gestation lasts 50-70 days; average litter size of 3-7 young, up to 10
Fantastic Fact
Lesser Madagascar hedgehog tenrecs go through a process called “torpor” in the colder and dryer months when prey is scarce. In the wild, this occurs usually from May to October. This process is similar to hibernation because they will lower their body temperature, respiration, and heartbeat to save energy.
