PLANNED GIVING

Whether in lifetime or in death, there are a number of viable options for individuals to support the Elmwood Park Zoo with gifts that work within the donor’s overall financial and estate planning.

Planned giving allows donors to leave a legacy of benefits that the Zoo will be able to enjoy for a number of years. A planned gift may also benefit a donor by providing lifetime income and an immediate tax deduction
 

Gifts Anyone Can Afford

You can support the Elmwood Park Zoo now without impacting your current financial standing.
  • Include a bequest to Elmwood Park Zoo in your will or trust. Bequests can be made for a specific amount, or a percentage of the remaining balance of your estate or trust. This gift can be directed to a particular exhibit or conservation program, or left to be used at the Zoo’s discretion.

  • Name Elmwood Park Zoo as a beneficiary of your retirement plan. You can designate all or a portion of the balance of your plan to go to the Zoo. This gift does not affect your regular lifetime withdrawals.

  • Transfer stocks, bonds, or mutual fund shares to the Zoo. You receive an immediate tax deduction for the fair market value of the securities on the date of their transfer.
 

Gifts That Pay You Income

Certain plans provide you and your family with lifetime income while generating generous gifts to the Elmwood Park Zoo.
  • Charitable Gift Annuity - When you transfer cash or securities to the Elmwood Park Zoo, the Zoo will pay you or your beneficiaries a fixed income for life in return. In many cases your annuity payments will be received at a rate higher than that of traditional stocks, CDs, or savings accounts. The Zoo retains the balance at the end of the contract.

  • Deferred Gift Annuity - When you transfer cash or securities to the Elmwood Park Zoo, the Zoo will pay you or your beneficiaries a fixed income for life, beginning on the future date specified in the contact. Deferred payments permit for higher annuity rates and generates lager charitable tax deductions. The Zoo retains the balance at the end of the contract.

  • Charitable Remainder Unitrust - When you transfer cash, securities, or other appreciated property to the Elmwood Park Zoo, it is placed into a trust fund that pays you or your beneficiaries a percentage of the principal annually. You receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your contribution, plus maximum flexibility over your investment and benefits. The remainder of the trust passes to the Zoo at the end of the term.

  • Charitable Remainder Annuity Trust - When you transfer cash, securities, or other appreciated property to the Elmwood Park Zoo, it is placed into a trust fund that makes fixed annual payments to you or your beneficiaries. You receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of your contribution, plus the piece of mind of a steady income that can be set to meet a specific time frame. The remainder of the trust passes to the Zoo at the end of the term.
 

Gifts That Protect Your Assets

These plans offer you several options for preserving the value of your home or business while mutually benefiting the Elmwood Park Zoo.
  • Charitable Lead Trust - Transferring securities or other appreciating assets to a Charitable Lead Trust pays the Elmwood Park Zoo fixed annual payments that reduce the ultimate tax cost of transferring those assets back to your heirs. All the trust’s appreciation goes to your heirs tax-free. 

  • Retained Life Estate - You can transfer the title to your residence or vacation property to the Elmwood Park Zoo and continue to live there for the rest of your life. You receive an immediate income tax deduction for a portion of the appraised value of the property. The Zoo only retains possession of your property after your life estate ends.

  • Charitable Bargain Sale – You can sell your property to the Elmwood Park Zoo for a bargain price below the appraised market value. You will receive an immediate income tax deduction for the discount you took on the value of the property.
